The Benefits of Using Tanning Lotion

By Baxter Owens

"You probably know a little bit about tanning. You know that you need to either get some sun or get into a tanning booth if you want to get a good tan. And you also know that there are some health risks associated with tanning so you’re aware that you have to take some basic common sense precautions when tanning. But do you know about the importance of using tanning lotion when you are tanning? Many people who know about basic tanning stuff aren’t aware that tanning lotion is crucial for good tanning practices.

There are a number of different benefits to using tanning lotion instead of just tanning on your own without lotion. Some of these benefits include:

• Instant gratification. Okay, well it’s not quite instant but one of the major benefits of tanning with a lotion is that it speeds up the process of tanning so that you can get the look that you want without having to invest so much time in getting it. This is great for people who have an upcoming event that they want to be tan for, as well as for people who are just generally too busy to spend a lot of time on tanning.

• Moisturizing effects. Tanning lotion is a lotion and therefore it gives your skin some of the moisture that it needs which improves the all-over appearance and health of your skin.

• Reduced risk of sun damage. Tanning lotion protects your skin from the harmful effects of tanning. This means that you have a lower risk of cancer and decreased aging effects when you tan using a tanning lotion. Most people consider this the best of all of the benefits of tanning lotion.

• Regular use of tanning lotion can assist you in enhancing the tone of your natural tan. This means that when you wear tanning lotion during the day as you go about your normal outdoor activities, you’re improving your tan.

• That great “glow” that you want to get from a tan is much easier to come by when you use tanning lotion.

• Your tanning process continues after you leave the tanning booth. Tanning lotion has the benefit of helping to make your tan keep working on development even when you’re not in the rays anymore. Tan extender lotions are best for this.

Now that you know about the many benefits of using tanning lotion, you should also know that there is a right way and a not-so-right way to use tanning lotion. First of all, there are different kinds of tanning lotion and you need to be using the right kind for your skin tone and tanning practices to get the most benefit from your lotion. And secondly, you need to use tanning lotion along with the right kinds of tanning habits – such as the right amount of time in the tanning booth – to get the full benefits of the tanning lotion. Working with a professional at your local tanning salon, someone who knows the benefits of tanning lotion, is the best way to maximize your results."

Shaving - A Short History

By Jack Hobson

Have you ever wandered who started the daily ritual of shaving?

Drawings in caves from the stone age, indicate that men of that era pulled the hair from their faces. They did not learn how to cut the hair until about 30,000 BC, when they used flint blades for that purpose. Early man also used the flint blades to cut the skin and then he placed colors to create designs.

From about 3,000 BC, copper blades were made for the cutting of hair in both India and Egypt. For the next few thousand years, many razors have been uncovered from archeological sites. In Denmark, razors with bronze blades and carved handles in leather cases have been found. Alexander the Great started the trend to have short hair and a shaved face. Roman women also started removing hair from their bodies through this period, using creams and drugs and the Roman men shaved every day, usually at the barbershop, if they did not have a servant. Indian men neatly trimmed their facial hair but removed their chest and pubic hairs by shaving. The Indian women removed the hair from their legs with tweezers. Some women removed the hair from their legs by singeing them with a lamp. Roman men were recognized as men after their first shave at age 21. Julius Caesar removes all his facial hairs with tweezers.

From about 100 AD, shaving becomes old-fashioned and the bearded look becomes the "in thing", probably to cover a bad complexion.

The middle ages brought about large volumes of clothing and head-dresses and women once again removed any sight of facial hair every day. Men wore their beards long. Schools opened that teach people about personal grooming (cosmetics, hair management etc,) first in Spain and then in other places. Towards the end of the crusades, men started to be clean shaven again.

Queen Elizabeth maintains a lily white complexion and removes all hair form the eyebrows and forehead areas. The ladies of this day followed suit, but wore hairpieces as well. Not long after the men also removed all hair from the forehead.

Finally in the late 1700’s French men realized that they can shave themselves and French women shaved their heads completely, but wore decorative wigs. The first “safety razors” became available. They were not very safe, but promised to reduce the depth of any wound received whilst shaving! In the early 1800s English men boasted about the need to shave three times a day to maintain a proper image. European women were still concocting hair removal potions – which did not work!

The next hundred or so years provided many inventions for grooming, including “safety razors” and disposable razors by none other then Gillette (who are still a major player in providing grooming needs) Then in 1901 the double edged razor blade is invented by a joint venture between Gillette and Nickerson – and this is still available today. New designs continually appear until the a wind up razor was invented, followed by the electric razor. Women did not shave their underarms until a marketing campaign in the United States in 1918, where the advertisement maintained the underarm hair was both unhygienic and unfeminine. Col Shick designed a new type of razor in competition with Gillette and so the race for new and better razors was well and truly on. Shick invented the first dry electric shaver and Phillips of the Netherlands invented the first wet electric shaver. Twin blade, then triple blade and now quad blade disposable shavers are available.

The modern shaving devices are much safer and quicker to use then the earlier one, but like all fashion, perhaps the trend for shaving will change sometime in the future.

How to Be a Cheap Green Beauty

By Carrie Lauth

While it's great that there are many natural and organic beauty products available nowadays, it's still better for the environment and your pocketbook to avoid buying products you don't need. Let's focus on the "reducing" aspect of the equation. If you don't NEED it, don't buy it, even if it's eco friendly. Here are some ways to be a "green" beauty.

Eliminate products you don't need

Skipping beauty products you don't really need means using less packaging and other resources. Here are some of the products you can probably do without.

Beauty and skin care experts agree that toner (or astringent) is not necessary. If you cleanse your face well and rinse well, you can skip the toner.

If you have oily skin you probably don't need moisturizer, and if you have normal skin, your sunscreen might be enough of a moisturizer. All skin types should use a sunscreen daily. If your skin is dry, use the gentlest cleanser you can and you can get away with less moisturizer.

Most people, unless their skin is extremely oily, don't need to wash their faces with a cleanser in the morning. Of course it goes without saying that you should thoroughly remove makeup and cleanse your face at night, but as long as you do this, your face is clean enough in the morning.

Just splash with warm water then apply sunscreen.

Exfoliation is important for healthy and pretty skin, but you probably don't need an expensive product. Use a very clean washcloth to gently scrub your face. Or put some baking soda in your hand and use that as a gentle scrub. Or sugar or salt mixed with a little olive oil. Olive oil makes a great eye makeup remover too.

Skip the allover foundation. Most people don't need it all over their faces but just a little bit under the eyes and around the nose. Use a little tinted moisturizer instead or try mineral makeup, which makes your face look flawless and seems to last forever.

Skip certain steps in your beauty routine

If you curl your eyelashes you might be able to skip mascara and eyeliner. It opens up the eyes and really makes them pop. Keeping your brows groomed also shapes your face without needing a product. In addition to tweezing, try trimming the longer hairs that stick out after you comb your brows (use cuticle nippers).

Many hair care experts agree that most people wash their hair too often. Twice a week is enough. On the other days, you can rinse your hair and then reapply a small amount of styling product. Not washing your hair daily saves water and you will often find you won't need conditioner and other products for the hair, as it will be easier to style with some of the natural oils intact.

Try multi use products

Dr. Loretta, author of "6 Weeks to Sensational Skin" says that dead sea salts have multiple uses for skin problems: everything from acne to eczema.

Body lotion or conditioner can double as shaving cream. You can even buy makeup that can be used for eyes, cheeks and lips.

Make your own green beauty products

Making your own skin care products usually means you'll use far less packaging than if you bought everything. It doesn't have to be super complicated though. You can mix honey and salt to make a body or facial scrub. Or sugar and olive oil. Lemon juice, salt and olive oil are great to exfoliate and bleach elbows and heels.

Learn to love your natural look

My sister has super thick, curly hair. The kind that, if it were long, would rest in ringlets down her back. The kind that other people spend $100 per perm to try and achieve. Now she has accepted her hair and decided not to fight nature, but when she was a teenager and everone had Farrah Fawcett wings, straight was the look. So she would spend money and time trying to chemically straighten her hair, which was mostly an exercise in futility!

Learn to accept your natural face. Freckles are cute and don't have to be covered up. Curly hair is beautiful and doesn't have to be straightened. Ask your hairdresser to help you choose a style that works with your facial shape and hair texture. The more you try to change your natural look the more money and time you'll spend.

Natural Face Lift - The Power To Look Young Is In Our Hands

By Juliet Cohen

Ageing is not merely a skin problem. The skin is attached to the facial muscles, consequently when the muscles droop and sag, the skin attached comes down with them. Natural face-lifts are a slower way to lift the facial and neck skin to make it appear younger. There are about sixty muscles in the face, all of these muscles are just sitting there getting longer and longer, until everything ends up in the neck area.

There are two realities that every person should realize about aging. First of all, wrinkles and fine lines are impossible to avoid. Second, you can do something about it once they're there. The most popular among the new age alternatives is the natural face lift. The reasoning behind this idea is that signs of aging are the direct result of stress and negative energy. These two conditions build up in the face and reveal themselves as wrinkles and fine lines. There are a variety of techniques out there that promise to combat signs of aging or eliminate them completely. Among these are plastic surgery face lifts, facial implants, Botox, and dermabrasion. An anti aging facial too is not a bad option as the massage and tightening packs reduce appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

These are all proven techniques for alleviating wrinkles and skin imperfections that come with age, but they have their own complications. The natural face lift allows you to locate and activate twelve major nerve centers on the face and neck. Gentle touches and sweeps using your hands and fingers open energy flows and nerve pathways to ease contractions in facial muscles, balance organ systems, and release a free flow of vital body energy. Skin cells are fed, tiny lines disappear, and the beauty beneath the surface of your skin awakens. A face lift can make all the difference in your daily life.

Not only will it improve your relations with others but it will also instill a sense of confidence because you won't have to see those wrinkles and loose skin every day in the mirror. Face lifts come in a variety of flavors, but all of them seek to pick up the slack in your face's skin and reduce fine lines and wrinkling. The traditional plastic surgery face lift is a medical procedure requiring local anesthetic and a scalpel. Incisions are made near the ear to allow the skin and underlying tissue to be reconstructed for firmer, more youthful-looking skin.

Some non-surgical techniques have evolved to provide an alternative to surgery. These techniques don't have the same kind of results as surgical techniques. They involve a variety of indirect treatment methods. These methods have shorter recovery periods and fewer complications, but also reduced results. These non-surgical methods are better suited for younger people with initial signs of aging that can be easily smoothed out with these maintenance procedures. There is on more chemical found in the body, which helps to keep the skin young, and the elasticity intact is Hyaluronic acid.

It's a natural substance found in our body in sufficient amount when we are born. But it decreases with age so does the elasticity of the skin. This substance keeps the skin tight, toned, young, and moist and wrinkle free. With age when the production of HA decreases in the body, it starts loosing its youthfulness. There is the traditional method that requires larger incisions and an endoscopic method that uses smaller ones. Usage of skin toners, face packs to tighten the skin and anti aging creams and lotions, which contain some anti aging substances such as collagen, make the skin appear tighter and brighter.

Mini Spa A Home Experience

By Kevin Pederson

Who does not want healthy radiant glowing skin? Everybody. Visit to the spas, beauty salons, usage of expensive skin care products are quite a common thing in todays time.

Our skin requires dollops of TLC to remain smooth and healthy. We spend tons of money on buying creams, powders, cleansers, toners, ointments, etc, to keep our skin looking and feeling beautiful and healthy. But sometimes these expensive products do more harm than ever.

Turning to using the items in your kitchen for skin care and hair care is the last thing on everyone mind. Nature has given us all the natural inexpensive ingredients within arms reach for a radiant, glowing complexion, but they remain unused most of the time. There is nothing like a mini spa like experience at home with natural ingredients that give us a chance to rejuvenate and revitalize our skin at very less or no cost.

If you are wondering why use home remedy for skin care here are few reasons - they are inexpensive, easily available at all times and one knows the ingredients that go into making skin care recipes.

Simple home remedies for better looking skin

1. Drinking 8 glasses of water daily will keep the skin healthy from inside.

2. Rubbing your skin with baking soda during a shower once a week will remove blackheads and give a smooth silky feel to the skin.

3. Rub raw fresh tomato or its juice on the oily areas of the face to get a glowing complexion

4. Olive oil is good moisturizer for skin and also helps in soothing sunburned skin.

5. Vinegar and water mixed in equal proportion makes an excellent substitute for chemical body deodorants available in the market. They keep away the unpleasant sweat smell at bay.

6. If you are suffering from athletes foot, take vinegar footbaths for a week and get rid of your ailment.

7. If you have dry skin, try mash avocados as a face pack.

8. If you are suffering from eczema, use egg yolk instead of soap as it will heal the damaged skin

9. Egg yolk mixed with honey is an excellent facemask.

Hands show our age, if not cared for. Doing household work with out wearing any protection strips the skin of its natural moisture, Products, which have high pH content and harsh alkaline ingredients can make the hand look and feel rough. Use mild pH soaps and less harsh alkaline products on hands while doing household work. Wear gloves to protect your self from cold weather, heavy gardening or housework.

Simple skin or dry body brushing daily stimulates blood and lymph flow, encourages new cell growth and exfoliates the skin. Start to brush your feet and then up the legs in one direction. Cellulite prone areas like thighs can be brushed in circular motions for about 3-5 minutes. Dry body brushing is best done every morning before a shower, as increased blood flow will wake you up.

Caring for feet at home with natural ingredients is a pleasure. Remove the old nail polish and trim your toenails. Dip your feet in large bucket of warm water filled with Epsom salts. Rinse your feet for 15 minutes and pat dry. Use pumice stone to clear away the rough spots. Push back the cuticles with an orangewood stick. Moisturize the feet with rich moisturizing cream to improve circulation and relieve fatigue. Apply two coats of nail polish preceded by a base coat or just wear socks whole day to keep the feet smooth.

Kevin Pederson has written many articles on hair and skin care a guide to important hair and skin care tips The article offers information on how simple home remedies for skin care make a whole lot of difference.

Rose Power

By Jodi Hutchinson

What drew me to the wonders of rose water? In 1991 I sampled a traditional eastern Indian dessert that was soaked in rose water. At first, I was not a big fan of this exotic taste, but after learning about the rich history and the powerful healing properties, my fascination began to grow. Rose water can be applied topically to soothe the skin, ingested orally it can aid digestion, and as an aromatherapy it has been known to lift the spirits.

Around the world the rose is known as the “Queen of Flowers.” The use of rose water dates back to ancient civilizations of Persia, Rome, India and Egypt. Cleopatra bathed in rose water and used rose oil to seduce her lover Anthony. Roman banquets were decorated with roses, the Hindus cleaned the altar with rose water, and often, when we think of heaven the angels are frequently depicted enjoying the celestial fragrance of the rose. The ancient Greeks and Romans extracted flavor from rose petals by steeping them in water or oil, and in the 10th century, Persia began the first distillation of rose water. Rose water was first obtained by steam distillation of fresh rose blossoms. It is a pure, undiluted food-grade product that does not contain any preservatives, additives or synthetic ingredients.

Inhaling the unique scent of natural rose water empowers the mind and calms nervous tension. The aroma is one of the most immediate and evocative of sensations. The actual rose oil may be used in a room diffuser or aromatherapy ring and allowed to evaporate throughout the room to restore general balance to the body and mind. And don’t forget, it is an aphrodisiac!

Rose water is used as a flavoring for food in a variety of Indian curries, Greek pastries and Middle East dishes including baklava and marzipan. The water should be used in small amounts as a flavoring and can be streaked through cream, custards, ice cream, baked sweets and fruits for an element of surprise. In Morocco they combine fresh squeezed orange juice with a splash of rose water to begin the day. I have used it to flavor fresh lemonade on a hot summer day to help cool the body. When ingested, rose water is known to have a cleansing, cooling and soothing effect on the body, and will aid digestion.

The use of the rose is far and varied, especially in the area of skin care. Rose water is a toning, hydrating and cleansing product for all skin types and is often substituted in place for water in lotions and cosmetic recipes. As an emollient, rose may alleviate dry, chapped and itchy skin. It has a tonic and gentle astringent effect on the capillaries just below the skin’s surface which makes it useful in diminishing mild skin redness. You can spray it on acne or sunburn to help calm the irritation. Add rose water to your bath for some extra moisture and your skin may become more evenly textured and supple.

The rose has been used throughout the millenniums and is still the oldest cultivated plant in the United States. It is always important to look for rose water that contains only pure natural rose oil because synthetic rose ingredients do not have any therapeutic value. Store rose water in the refrigerator after it is opened to maintain the freshness. This versatile water can be found at specialty food markets, natural food stores, delicatessens, and Asian grocery stores.

I now use “rose power” on a daily basis to create sensational aromas, transform a simple glass of juice, soften my skin, or to balance the emotions after a long day.

Composing Perfumes

By Cathy Rideg

The PerfumerThe task of composing perfumes that will sell is to enhance an expert on perfume composition or known in the fragrance industry as the perfumer. They are also sometimes referred to as "The Nose" due to their fine sense of smell and skill in smell composition. The perfumer is effectively an artist who is trained in depth on the concepts of fragrance aesthetics and who is capable of conveying abstract concepts and moods with their fragrance compositions.
A perfumer must have knowledge of a large variety of fragrance ingredients and smell. They must be able to distinguish each of the fragrance ingredients whether alone or in combination with other fragrances. As well, they must know how each ingredient reveals itself through time when mixed with other ingredients.

The composition of a perfume begins when the perfumer’s employer’s are given a brief which will contain the specifications for the desired perfume that the organisation is trying to achieve. The employees are given several tasks to complete. They are expected to describe what the perfume smells like, their feelings after smelling the perfume, when the perfume should be worn, also the price of the perfume oil concentrate. This will determine what aromatics and fragrance ingredients can/will be used in the perfume composition.

This process is an in depth and tedious task but it is essential. The perfumer will then start a process of blending various perfume mixtures and try to achieve the outcome the brief. This process can take several months or years. Once all the information is gathered the perfume composition may be used as a fragrance enhancement in shampoos, make-up, detergents, etc or it may be marketed and sold directly to the public as a fine fragrance.

TechniquePerfume oils usually contain tens to hundreds of ingredients. These ingredients can be roughly grouped into four groups: primary scents, modifiers, blenders and fixatives (refer notes below).

Instead of building a perfume from "ground up", many modern perfumes and colognes are made using fragrance bases, which are essential oils and aromatic chemicals. The effort used in developing bases by fragrance companies or individual perfumers may equal that of a marketed perfume, since they are useful in that they are reusable.

The perfume's fragrance oils are then blended with ethyl alcohol and water, aged in tanks for a minimum of 14 days and filtered through processing equipment to remove any sediment and particles before the solution can be filled into the perfume bottles.

Notes:

Primary scents: Can consist of one or a few main ingredients for a certain concept, such a "rose". Alternatively, multiple ingredients can be used together to create an "abstract" primary scent that does not bear a resemblance to a natural ingredient. For instance, jasmine and rose scents are commonly blends for abstract floral fragrances. Cola flavourant is a good example of an abstract primary scent.

Modifiers: These ingredients alter the primary scent to give the perfume a certain desired character: for instance, fruit esters may be included in a floral primary to create a fruity floral; calone and citrus scents can be added to create a "fresher" floral. The cherry scent in cherry cola can be considered a modifier.

Blenders: A large group of ingredients that smooth out the transitions of a perfume between different "layers" or bases. Common blending ingredients include linalool and hydroxycitronellol.
Fixatives: Used to support the primary scent by bolstering it. Many resins and wood scents, and amber bases are used for fixative purposes.

CHANEL Story - Part 1

By Cathy Rideg

She adopted the name Coco during a brief career as a cafe and concert singers 1905-1908. First a mistress of a wealthy military officer then of an English industrialist, she drew on the resources of these patrons in setting up a millinery shop in Paris in 1910, expanding with two men Deauville and Biarritz, which helped her find customers among women of society, and her simple hats became popular.

By the 1920s, her fashion house had expanded. Her relaxed fashions, short skirts, and casual look were in sharp contrast to the corset fashions popular in the previous decades. Chanel herself dressed in mannish clothes, and adapted these more comfortable fashions which other women also found liberating.

In 1922 Chanel introduced a perfume, Chanel No. 5, which became and remained popular, and remains a profitable product of Chanel's company even today. Pierre Wertheimer became her partner in the perfume business in 1924; Coco Chanel received 10% and her friend Bader 20%. The Wertheimer’s continue to control the perfume company today.

Coco Chanel introduced her signature "little black dress" in 1926. Most of her fashions had a staying power, and didn't change much from year to year -- or even generation to generation.

She briefly served as a nurse in World War I. In 1954 her comeback restored her to the first ranks of haute couture. Her natural, casual clothing including the Chanel suit once again caught the eye , and purses of women around the world. . She introduced pea jackets and bell bottom pants for women. She was still working in 1971 when she died on January 10, 1971.

The German Karl Lagerfeld has assumed the artistic directorship of the House of Chanel since 1984. With his media coups, personified by such super models as his fellow countrywoman Claudia Schiffer, who succeeded the French model Inès de la Fressange, he has lent a new dimension to an institution which still fills the dreams of Americans and the whole world.

Beautiful Skin Regime

By Juliet Cohen

Skin is the body’s mirror of our inner health and wellness, both physical and emotional. Skin plays a vital role in our life, how one looks and feels directly correlates to ones skin. Skin is the largest organ of the body and comprises of cells. Each cell has a life span of 120 days. Skin constantly sheds dead cells and new cells constantly replace them. Skin reflects your state of health, being soft and smooth when well cared for, or dry and flaky when taken for granted. Everyone wants beautiful skin. Some ideas and information to help you have radiant, healthy skin. Skin care is very important for women and men of all ages. Proper moisture levels in your skin (epidermis) help diminish signs of aging and distress from the outdoors. Make-up will help you to some extent but what is most important is natural beauty and a glowing skin. The major culprits that ruin and play havoc on our skin are ultraviolet rays, pollution and stress to some extent.

Men and women will see a marked improvement in their skin when following a skincare plan. Cleanse, tone and moisturise daily. Exfoliate and use a mask regularly. Cleansing removes the dust and stress from your face by cleaning the pores and circulating the blood supply. Use a gentle cleansing agent. Face washes are specially prepared to be effective at cleansing your skin gently and tenderly. Two litres of water daily will hydrate your skin from the inside. A good moisturizer will help prevent your skin’s moisture from evaporating into the atmosphere. Use sunscreens during daytime to protect your skin form any kind of damage and premature wrinkles. Steaming helps release toxins and impurities that may be under the skins surface, blocking circulation. Fill a bowl of boiling water, then gently place your face about 4”-5” from the surface and hold for 2-3 minutes.

Beautiful Skin Tips

1. Drink 2 litres of water daily.

2. Enjoy a diet rich in fresh fruit and vegetables.

3. Try to have a sound, restful sleep.

4. Avoid excess exposure to extremes of temperature.

5. Practice a daily skin care regime.

6. Exercise regularly.

7. Keep stress levels to a minimum.

8. Limit intake of caffeine and alcohol.

The Truth About Facial Scrubs

By Janice Wee

In the past, washing your face simply meant taking a wash cloth and scrubbing your face with soap and water and rinsing it off.

These days, washing your face means applying a cleanser, massaging it in, tissuing it off or rinsing it off with water. Then you soak a cotton ball with a toner to remove all traces of the cleanser and tone your skin. At least once a week, a facial scrub might be applied before the toner, in which a grainy cream or wash is massaged onto skin to get rid of dirt and slough off dead skin cells to keep skin clear.

Is all that necessary?

Do you really need facial scrubs?

Actually, the old fashioned way of using a wash cloth to scrub your skin is akin to what the facial scrubs do. If you simply cleanse and rinse your skin without sloughing off the dead skin cells, chances are, the skin might get flaky leading to dry looking skin that is dehydrated beneath.
Another possibilitiy is that the debris left behind might clog the pores, giving bacteria the perfect breeding ground which can well lead to acne.

Hence regular scrubs are necessary.

So why buy a scrub when a wash cloth will do?

Personally, I'd rather not use a wash cloth. The thought of bacteria or mould breeding on that wash cloth is enough for me to turn to the first off-the-shelf facial scrub I can find. Sure, use a wash cloth if you intend to send it to the laundry every day and use a fresh wash cloth each day.
Imagine scrubbing your face with the wash cloth. The bacteria and dirt from the skin gets left behind on the cloth. Rinsing it with water wouldn't get rid of all the bacteria and soap. As you leave the washcloth in the bathroom, which I assume, doubles up as the toilet, the bacteria from doing business floats in the air. Bacteria from the air happily breeds on the moist washcloth which you then use to scrub your face at night.

Okay, I sound like a germ phobe and if your skin is fine with that, a wash cloth should do.
Alternatively, you could make your own scrub. I tried that. A tiny jar of powdered almonds makes a good scrub. Dip your fingers into it, add water, mix and you have got a scrub. The problem is the almond powder left in the damp bathroom, mould and bacteria thrive. If you do not take care, the moisture in the scrub introduced by wet fingers encourage mould and bacteria to thrive which can lead to disastrous results if you use it on your skin, since that home made scrub does not contain anything that would kill the mould or bacteria.

Another popular facial scrub is plain old sugar. My skin didn't like it as it was rough. Akin to rubbing sandpaper on your face. Add to the ants that decided to colonize the bathroom, or rather, my sugar scrub, I switched back to store bought facial scrubs facial scrubs

Types of Perfumes

By Juliet Cohen

Perfume, also called Extract or Extrait , can include 15-40% perfume concentrates. Perfume is made up of alcohol, water & perfume (fragrance) oil. Perfume is a scented liquid worn on the skin to impart a pleasant odor. Perfume is also made up of animal and plant-based aromatic compounds, dissolved in a mixture of alcohol and water. Most highly concentrated form of fragrance, containing between 20 - 50% perfume compound, It’s the strongest and the longest lasting. The amount of scented matter to solvent determines whether the blend is a perfume or a cologne. The highest proportion of scent is found in true 'perfume' - anywhere from 25 to 40% is pure scent. Pure perfume is rarely sold, since it is prohibitively expensive and, frankly, far too easy to 'overdo. Most consumers are more familiar with eau du parfum, which is 15-30% aromatics.

Perfume has been an essential part of human culture for centuries. People love to stay fragranced. It is pleasurable and gives a wonderful feeling of individuality. Earlier almost common fragrances were worn by the males and females. There are 3 major types: oriental, floral & chypre (means "very sincere" in French). There are also many sub-variations such as woody, musky, aquatic, spicy & fruity. The floral fragrances are created by the extracts of different flowers such as jasmine, roses, lavender, carnation etc. Floral fragrances are the most in demand scent in the whole world. They are loved by almost all the generations. Woody fragrances are easy to adapt and comfortable to wear. Oriental fragrances are strongest as compared to other fragrances. It includes rich undertones and sensual overtones that make it a heavy blend.

Oriental fragrances are pretty strong and are considered best for the evening events, corporate environments and special events, age is no barrier. Jasmine, gardenia, and rose bases are the most popular of the popular, often for their unique blending style and their ability to match most body chemistries. Fruity fragrances are generally fresh and spicy. It is quite youthful and is suitable for all types of weather. They are best for the one who likes wearing classic fragrances with a tint of flair in it. It gives an aroma of crispness in summer and warm cider and deserts in winter. Most modern perfumes and colognes are made using the fragrance oils that the fragrances houses develop using essential oils and aromatic chemicals. Perfume oils are similar to perfumes, with the exception that the solvent is oil-based rather than alcohol-based.

Types of Perfume

1. Aftershaves (AS), lotions & splashes: the least concentrated of all perfume types containing 0.5% - 2% perfume oils.

2. Parfum: the highest concentrate of perfume with approx 22% oils.

3. Perfume oils are similar to perfumes, with the exception that the solvent is oil-based rather than alcohol-based.

4. Moisturizing perfume mist is a fragrance that does not contain alcohol. It is a spray that contains oil and leaves skin with a silky smooth veil of perfumed moisturizers.

5. Solid perfumes are often molded into pillboxes or tiny compacts to fit easily in a handbag for on-the-go applications.

Cellulite - Lumps Made Of Fat And Toxins!

By Joey River

Cellulite consists of fat, toxins and water. All those toxins that the body could not dispose off get collected in cellulite and thereby form lumps on legs, thighs, buttocks, waist, making body look ugly, fat and uneven. Popular notion is that cellulite is a problem of fat or obese women, this is entirely untrue, many thin women also face cellulite problems.

Who is most likely to get cellulite?

Cellulite formation has many causes some of these causes are avoidable and some over which you have no control. Some of the unavoidable causes are heredity and medications. Heredity has a big role to play, some are genetically programmed to get cellulite, cellulite first starts appearing at the time of puberty or sometimes after pregnancy.

There are also some avoidable reasons for cellulite formation. Altering your lifestyle might help you avoid cellulite considerably. These are, firstly diet, if you are a person who enjoys a lot of junk food and live entirely on it, then cellulite becomes unavoidable, unlike healthy food junk food lacks nutrition and can cause severe nutritional deficiencies, also junk food lacks fiber therefore digestion and removal of toxins from the body does not take place. Inclusion of aerated drinks containing caffeine, caffeine and alcohol increases your chances of getting cellulite; so reducing or stopping consumption of these substances might help avoiding cellulite formation.

Another reason is inadequate consumption of water, it is necessary to have at least 7-8 glasses of water each day for your skin to remain hydrated and body to have enough water to facilitate proper flow of blood throughout. Water also keeps body and skin cool. Adequate consumption of water will help avoiding cellulite considerably.

Third avoidable factor is smoking, smoking puts in enormous amounts of toxins in your system, not just the toxins but it also weakens skin. Smoking affects not just the heart, lungs but also skin quality and quantity of toxins; therefore, smoking increases chances of your getting cellulite considerably. If you would like to avoid cellulite formation smoking should be given up completely.

Cellulite can be cured, but there is not guarantee that it will not appear again, your lifestyle makes a lot of difference regarding cellulite. If you have severe cellulite, it will make sense consulting your doctor regarding your problem. You can use creams and surgery to rid of cellulite, though exercises do not eliminate cellulite completely, it does help in fighting toxins and fat. Exercises also help maintaining proper equilibrium of all hormones and keeps illness at bay.

If you are a medicine freak and love to pop in pills for smallest reason, this too might result into cellulite since some chemical compositions increase toxins in body. Try and avoid any medicines you can so that toxin levels can be kept at a minimum. Cellulite affects women the most, it is rarely seen in men. Therefore, women have to make specific efforts if they wish to look absolutely attractive with perfect skin.

Making Perfume Last Longer On Your Skin - A Few Good Tips

By Katherine Durkes

Sometimes, you find the perfect perfume, but it has one serious flaw. After a few hours, the fragrance has disappeared as though you had never put it on! What can you do to make your perfume last a little longer (and be worth the price of the bottle?)

First, here's a little background about what makes perfume smell. If the perfume never evaporated, we'd never smell it! The scent molecules evaporate and perfume the air around us, where our sensitive noses detect the scent. Different components of the perfume evaporate at different rates, which means that the perfume will change over time. (This is also called "volatility.")

Why are some perfumes longer lasting than others? Why do some stay on other people, but not on you? The volatility of fragrances also depends on the wearer. Body temperature, weather, and skin dryness affect how fast your perfume launches off your skin.

People with oilier skin retain fragrance longer than people with dry skin. The oil binds the fragrance to the skin and results in a more controlled release of scent over time. On dry-skinned people, the fragrance tends to bounce right off. Redheads or pale blondes with dry skin have more problems with perfume longevity than most.

If this describes you, try applying perfume to the oiliest parts of your body. Since everyone is different, you will have to experiment and see what works best for you. For women, between the breasts is an excellent place for perfume. The hairline is also good for many people, but it may clash with the scent of your hair care products.

Also, do not put your fragrance on immediately after you get out of the shower. The heat, soap, and water strip away your skin's natural oils. Try using a body lotion first, and give your skin time to recover its moisture balance. This will give the perfume something to latch on to.

Layering perfume with different products in the same fragrance helps to seal in the scent. If you start with body wash and lotion underneath your perfume, it may control and slow the release of the fragrance. You can also carry an eau de toilette purse spray or roll-on oil to refresh the scent after a few hours.

What if your favorite perfume doesn't come in body care products? You can make your own by adding designer fragrance concentrates to unscented products. The designer oils are not from the original perfume manufacturer, but made by a separate company to be a close - if not exact - match for the perfume. Most people cannot tell the difference between them and "the real thing," and it is often the only way you will be able to get lotion, shower gel, and other products in your favorite designer scent.

You'd be amazed at how many are available, and most of them are indistinguishable from the "real thing." Small or specialty brands, such as Demeter, are not available, but almost every modern popular perfume is. Thousands of perfumes have high-quality duplications for you to use.

To scent your own products is simple. If you can make your own ice cream sundaes, you can add scent to a basic lotion. Unscented products can be found in health food stores, such as Whole Foods and Wild Oats, and drug stores like CVS. You can even make scented shampoo and conditioner! The good news is that unscented products are usually good quality because they are for people with skin sensitivities.

Start with a few drops in a small amount of lotion, and increase the strength as you like it. It's a good idea to buy a few empty travel-sized containers so you can experiment. If you add too much fragrance, your product may separate or thin out. Don't worry if this happens - it's still good!

Just shake it up or add more unscented product to dilute it. 1% is usually the limit for products such as shampoo or body wash before they start thinning; you usually can't add more than 1% concentrated fragrance to any product that washes or bubbles. 1/2% is the recommended amount.

Remember, though, that perfume is a cosmetic. It's only temporary, and no matter what you do, it will eventually evaporate completely. Enjoy it while it lasts!

Proactive Skin Care - Ready For A Nutritious Diet Then?

By Martin Haworth

Good nutrition is always a great place to begin your skin care. With most of the things in life, our body is affected by the food we eat. A nutritious diet will significantly affect how your skin is protected, as well as helping repair when you have a problem.

If you have decided on a skin care regime, there are a few basic concepts that it is good to be clear on. The first of these is recognizing that everything you ingest is going to make a difference. Preparing for the worst by using an advanced process, starts with what you do in advance of the problems that can occur.

So a balanced and nutritious diet is not something that you would be advised to change when your skin gets a problem.

If possible, you are best advised to have a good diet as part of your skin care tactics - then problems will be less likely.

The First Diet Rule For Excellent Skin Care

There is one thing above all that will ensure that you are doing the best for your skin at all times. The body responds best when it is fully hydrated, so one of the best tips for proactive skin care is to drink plenty of water. This hydration maximizes the hydration of the skin.

Now, it's a strange thing to realize that drinking water on the inside of your body makes much of a difference to your skin. So, think of it like this. The skin is made up of billions of cells that are maintained by fluid flowing in and out all the time.

By ensuring that you have enough of the right sort of fluid in your body at all times, your skin care actions will stand a good chance of success.

Water enables the toxins to be dissolved at cellular level and drawn out of the skin cells. Other, skin enriching ingredients will also be able to be transported in solution to the skin and keep it healthy as well. Enough water absorbed is a great first step for anyone interested in proactive skin care.

The Second Diet Rule For First Class Skin Care

Whilst it is not necessary to go the whole way to a vegetarian diet, effective skin care is about fresh foods. If you are able to supplement an excellent fluid intake with a good range of fresh fruit and vegetables, not only will you have a great route into your skin, but you will have the right inbound ingredient supply, to repair and maintain.

Proactive skin care with a vitamin and mineral rich diet, easily transported into the skin will be pretty much all you can do. In fact it is amazing how big a difference just these two things can do for you, leaving your skin with a healthy glow.

All the toxins removed and all the goodness replenished too.

How much fruit and veg? Well a good guide in your best skin care regime is five portions, of which one can be a fruit juice, but not more. How much is a portion? Well, if you eat it sensibly, there's not much need to do all the boring measuring and weighing stuff.

The Third Diet Rule For Your Best Skin Care

This one is easy and the converse of what goodness you put in. That's plenty of water to drink and a good range of fruit and vegetables to eat.

This is about what you want to avoid in your diet. Basically, the problem lies with all the junk stuff, that is often laden with saturated fats and artificial ingredients. The chemicals involved in the manufacturing processes are significantly important in negating any proactive skin care skin care efforts you are making.

This neatly coincides with what you do want to eat and drink, so there is a great balance that you can achieve.

Even when you want other foods to vary what you eat, by ensuring that you make food freshly, rather than out of a packet, tin or 'fast-food', you are ensuring that your proactive skin care efforts, through just diet alone, will be most likely to succeed.

Stunning Looks Can Be Yours

By Aaron Michaels

Do you observe TV talk shows and reality shows with discouragement, wishing you could be the charmed recipient of your own extreme makeover? Fortunately, with the appropriate methods up your sleeve, you can achieve a do-it-yourself makeover at home. Even better, for this category of makeover, you wont need to go under the knife!

Prior to beginning your makeover, there are a couple of critical concepts that you need to comprehend about makeovers. Number One: Looking fabulous always commences with the basics. In other words, there is no reason to get a new haircut, applying a lot of makeup, and piling on the fancy wardrobe if your skin, hair, teeth, and body are not in great form. Number Two: Makeovers require time. When you see a TV makeover, you get the shortened version. In real life, it will almost always take weeks to months to achieve the results you want. But don't worry, because it will happen, and people will notice!

Keep in mind the four major areas that must be improved in order to have a effective makeover. Your skin must be soft, fresh, and clear, your teeth should be white, you need a flattering hair cut and color, and you need to be in marvelous physical shape. Without these four elements, you will not achieve that "healthy glow" you really wish for. Once you have these attributes, it's easy to add great clothes and flawless makeup.

I can only talk briefly about each of these areas in this particular article, but I'll give you some techniques you won't easily find anywhere else.

Blemish-prone skin can be a really frustrating problem to eliminate, but it is possible. You will need to use top-rated skin care products on your skin, but if you still have to deal with acne, you need to change your diet. Eliminate caffeine and as many chemical substances (such as high fructose corn syrup) as you can. Your body eliminates toxins through your skin, which can cause acne. See the footer of this article for the skin care products that get my highest recommendation for gorgeous skin.

An experienced stylist can design a flattering style for your face shape. You should definitely consider coloring your hair, as it can dramatically enliven your appearance.

Over-the-counter teeth whitening products are quite popular today, and definitely recommended for enhancing your smile. There are many options; just check to see that the product you choose uses hydrogen peroxide as the active ingredient. Always follow the package instructions to avoid side effects.

Most intimidating of all can be the task of trimming down your figure, but it is vital. Not only your appearance, but your health demands that you maintain a slim body. My best recommendation for losing weight is to follow the Zone Diet. You can use a website such as formulazone.com. You must seriously commit to following the diet, but if you do you will surely have success.

Even though it may take you some time to achieve, you will be beyond proud of your accomplishment when you perform a true do-it-yourself makeover. Not only will you look great, but you will realize that you have dramatically improved your overall health in the process.

Visit Foolproof Acne Cures and Sense Skin Care to get the latest products to dramatically reduce, and even eliminate, your acne. Another favorite site is Teeth Whitening.

Beauty Advice - Eat Fruit and Vegetables to Look Younger

By Lin Parker

Good nutrition plays an important part in protecting us from the free radicals in our environment. The ageing process is associated with cell damage caused by free radical molecules. Free radicals can cause the break of down cells in our body and make us age faster. The effect of this can be skin wrinkling and mottling, hardening of the arteries, arthritis, Alzheimer's and coronary heart disease. Free radicals are also associated with the development of cancer cells in our bodies..

Antioxidants are natural anti-aging substances which can neutralise the free radicals in our bodies and protect us from cell damage. It is believed that antioxidants help reduce the aging process and protect us from the diseases of old age. Many fruits and vegetables contain high levels of antioxidants which protect us from free radicals.

ORAC (oxygen radical absorbance capacity) units are the new way to measure the antioxidant goodness of fruits and vegetables. ORACS were developed by the National Institute on Aging in the US. If food has a high ORAC value, it provides better protection against damaging free radicals. Fruits and vegetables with high ORAC scores include bananas, blueberries, broccoli, raw carrots, cranberries, pecan nuts, red kidney beans, kiwis, oranges, prunes, red cabbage, red peppers, spinach, strawberries and tomatoes. We all know that we should eat at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day for a healthy diet. Some health advisors now recommend that we eat 8 to 10 portions a day.

You can easily include these healthy fruits and vegetables into your diet. Try adding blueberries, prunes or strawberries to your breakfast cereal, and a banana or orange as a mid morning snack. Add kidney beans and grated raw carrot to salads, chilli con carne and stews.

Try baby leaf spinach in place of lettuce on your salad, and add to pizzas. Fruits and vegetables are also a good source of vitamins, minerals and fibre. Ideally, 3 out of 5 of your daily portions should be vegetables, as they contain more fibre and less sugar than fruit.

With our hectic lifestyles, we often eat convenience foods to save time on preparation, and many people are deficient in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants found naturally in food. If you smoke, drink excess alcohol, live in a built up area with pollution from cars and factories, or suffer from stress, then you are more at risk from the damaging effects of free radicals. If you find it difficult to eat at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day, then consider taking a nutritional supplement.

Here are some anti-ageing supplements which you can buy from health stores:

Lycopene is a powerful natural antioxidant, which helps to neutralise cell damaging free radicals.

Pyconegol is an extract from bark of the French maritime pine tree. It contains a natural blend of bioflavonoids and helps combat the harmful effects of cell damaging free radicals.Selenuim is seen as one of the best natural antioxidant sources. It is often combined with vitamins A,C and E.

The most important change we can make to improve our health and reduce the risk of age related diseases is to improve our nutrition. More and more people are concerned not only with staying healthy, but looking younger as they get older. Someone in their fifties who has a healthy lifestyle and high quality nutrition can look as if they are in their thirties.

Discount Contact Lenses - Tips To Help You Buy Right

By Helen Hecker

The sales of contact lenses are regulated by the Food And Drug Administration and the Federal Trade Commission. Now it's easy to order the perfect contact lenses online at a great discount.

Ophthalmologists are eye surgeons who study and treat eye diseases and can also perform the duties of optometrists. Optometrists examine eyes, diagnose and treat vision problems, and prescribe eyeglasses and contact lenses. In most states they can also prescribe medicine.

Opticians grind and dispense eyeglasses and in some states dispense contact lenses.

You'll want to take some simple precautions to make any lens purchase safe and effective. And all correcting contact lenses must have a valid prescription from an ophthalmologist or optometrist.

If you plan to wear contact lenses for more than 18 hours for the purpose of changing your eye color then buy colored soft lenses. You can mark rigid lenses in a way to show which lens is for which eye. They don't rip or tear, so they are easy to handle. Soft lenses are much easier to adjust and are much more comfortable than rigid lenses because they conform to the eye and absorb and hold water.

Soft lenses also come as disposables, used once and discarded, or as planned-replacement lenses. Rigid gas permeable contact lenses are durable, resistant to deposit buildup, and generally give a clearer, crisper vision. In some model lenses, each lens corrects for near and distance vision and in others, one lens is for near vision, and the other for distance.

There are several types of lenses in the marketplace today including soft contact lenses, rigid gas permeable lenses, extended wear lenses and disposables. Keep in mind contact lenses are often more complex than appears. The expiration date for your prescription is currently set by your state requiring a one-year or two-year renewal. If your state hasn't set a minimum expiration date, government regulation sets a one-year date unless your eye doctor determines there's a medical reason for an expiration date of less than one year.

Disposable lenses don't come with instructions for cleaning and disinfecting. But those lenses labeled specifically for planned replacement do. Extended wear lenses are usually soft contact lenses made of flexible plastics that allow oxygen to pass through to the cornea.

Check out any rebates that may be available from the seller, from the manufacturer, for first-time contact lens wearers and for individuals who buy lenses and get an eye exam. Beware of attempts to substitute a brand that is different from the one you want when buying contacts.

Ask about discount prices at your doctor's office when you have your eye examination, or during a follow-up visit after you get your prescription.

Always buy from a reputable company. You can buy contact lenses without a prescription, but the company would be selling you a prescription device as if it were an over-the-counter device violating FTC regulations - selling you contact lenses without actually having your prescription. And when you receive your order, if you think you've received an incorrect contact lens, check with your doctor or eye care professional right away; don't accept any substitution unless your eye care professional approves it. There are many good contact lens retailers now on the Internet making their lenses available at a discount for both prescription and non-prescription lenses.

If you have an insurance plan, the insurance plan's seller's prices may or may not be better than what you can find elsewhere. This should be just one option when you're shopping for contacts. Check to see if your health insurance plan includes vision coverage. Compare prices and get quotes from two or three online and offline suppliers.

To be sure your eyes remain healthy you shouldn't order lenses with a prescription that's expired or stock up on lenses just before the prescription is about to expire. It's much safer to be re-checked by your eye doctor. Interesting note: when the eyes are open, tears carry adequate oxygen to the cornea to keep it healthy, but during sleep, the eye produces fewer tears, causing the cornea to swell. And the risk of corneal ulcers for people who keep extended-wear lenses in overnight is 10 to 15 times greater than for those who use daily-wear lenses only while they're awake.

A basic rule: never swap your contact lenses with anyone else. And the most serious safety concern with any contact lens is from overnight use. Replace your contacts as recommended by your eye care doctor because they wear out as time goes by.

If you're looking for cheap contact lenses, you may find that cheap materials or other ways of cutting costs will affect the quality you want. Remember to use only contact lenses that are FDA-approved and only if prescribed by a licensed eye care professional. Ordering discount contact lenses online has never been simpler with, and sometimes without, a credit card.

11. Peel off masks are usually gel-based. They are applied to the face and then peeled off when dry.

Simple Solutions For Making Your Breasts Look Bigger Without Surgery

By Karin I Manning

I remember seeing Demi Moore in a gorgeous sexy dress in a movie once and instantly wished for the breasts that she had to fill out the garment beautifully. There is absolutely no doubt that larger breasts can make a woman feel more sexy, more beautiful and much more desirable.

However, surgery is not the only solution. This article will discuss simple solutions for making your breasts look bigger without surgery or any other enlargement methods.

The easiest way to do this is with no effort at all on your part but with the help of a breast boosting bra.

There are a number of these available on the market, particularly targeting women with saggy, droopy breasts. The best boob boosting bra would have supportive cups.

Another way of achieving good support is by purchasing an underwire bra. However, make sure the bra is comfortable long term, otherwise it will annoy you all day.

Julia Roberts made padded bras famous again in one of her movies. Not only do padded bras give the appearance of fuller breasts but they also can position them closer together so they appear even more sexy.

Another solution available is a range of exercises. While they won't add cup sizes exercise can make them fuller and sit higher. Additionally, performing a range of back exercises can also make them more attractive.

There are a range of exercises that you can try to firm up their appearance. These includes a range of push up exercises, performing back extensions either with or without equipment, and a range of arm exercises, and back exercises.

You may be surprised to learn that your diet can also affect their appearance. Studies have revealed that women who aren't eating the right foods can have smaller breasts than women who are making more healthy choices. Sesame seeds are actually a great bust-firming food.

Women who are actually going through menopause are encouraged to eat foods that are said to increase breast size as it balances out their hormones. It is believed that some conventional vegetarian foods like tofu, dried beans, berries and wheat germ can also assist in their appearance.

The Truth Behind Cleopatra's Beauty

By Janice Wee

Cleopatra was renown for her beauty. She seduced Julius Caesar and then Mark Anthony. That alone should be proof that she must have been the most beautiful woman in her time.

Yet British archeologists unearthed silver coins that say otherwise. Her image on those plains were far from the ravishing beauty one expects to see. So why did the two most powerful men in her time fall for her?

For one thing, she was the queen of Egypt. Then again, her suitors ruled the Roman Empire. They could have had any woman they wanted.

There are several possibilities. Maybe society's perception of beautiful features in those days are different from modern society's view. Look at the 17th century paintings of nude beauties drawn by Ruben. In those days, those women were considered great beauties. Today, women like that would be considered fat and not beautiful by modern standards. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

One thing remains the same through the ages. Beauty is linked to healthy skin. The women in Ruben's paintings had gorgeous skin that glowed. Cleopatra and other egyptian queens are known to follow beauty regimes that focus on giving them beautiful skin. Baths in milk and honey. The use of aloe vera for their skin. All these treatments result in smooth, beautiful skin.
Let's start with milk and honey. Cleopatra is said to have bathed in milk and honey baths. Milk contains lactic acid, a form of alpha hydroxy acid which you would find in today's beauty products. It exfoliates the skin, removing the dead skin cells, causing the younger skin to emerge.

Honey is a humectant. It attracts water which makes it a wonderful moisturizer.

Bathing daily in milk and honey would give you smooth, younger, softer skin. If you have a bath tub, you can indulge in a milk and honey bath yourself.

1. Fill the bath with warm water

2. Add 4 cups of full cream milk powder for a really rich milk bath.

3. Add 1 cup of honey.

4. Wash yourself with soap and water and shampoo and rinse your hair before you enter the bath.

5. Relax and soak in the milk and honey bath for as long as you like.

The other beauty treatment that Cleopatra is said to have used have used aloe vera on her skin.

So did Queen Nefertiti.

Aloe vera gel actually heals the skin from eczema or other skin diseases. It even clears the skin from acne, thanks to the sulfur and salicylic acid found in it. Both sulfur and salicylic acid are used topically to treat acne. Aloe vera itself is rich in anti-oxidants which are known for their anti-aging properties. That's not all. It has anti-inflammatory properties, anti-bacterial properties and heals the skin without leaving scars. Using aloe vera topically also leads to clearer, fairer and healthier skin and healthy skin is considered beautiful throughout history.

Choosing and Applying Foundation, Concealer, Powder and Blusher

By Jo Rushworth

Foundation should match your skin tone. Test several different shades at the beauty counter by administering a small touch of foundation on to the back of the hand, rub in gently and choose the foundation that blends in with your natural skin colour. You will usually find a few free testers on display.

When applying foundation to your face, dab it on your hands and pat it on to your forehead, cheekbones, the tip of your nose and your chin. Blend it in. For the fragile area around the eyes, tap and blend in a mere trace of foundation with your little finger using an inward motion under the eyes. Do not forget to extend the foundation over the jaw line and neck so that you do not leave a line. Finish off by patting gently with a damp sponge to give your skin a lovely natural look.

Concealer: With the many different tones and textures of concealer on the market, finding one that suits you can be a daunting task. As mentioned earlier, test some on the back of your hand by gently rubbing on to the skin. The correct concealer for you will blend in with your natural skin tone.

Concealers are used mainly for correcting poor skin tones, concealing dark circles under the eyes, improving and contouring facial features.

A mauve based concealer will brighten up a pale and dull skin tone. Use a green base to conceal red blotches and ruddiness. Always apply foundation before the concealer.

To reduce dark circles under the eyes use a yellow based concealer. Apply to the darkest areas with a small brush and blend in gently with your fingertips. Apply the concealer prior to putting on your foundation.

To improve facial features, use pale shades to lengthen and lighten and dark shades to reduce, deepen and conceal. Available as creams, liquids and pencils. Apply after basic foundation.

Contour your face using a foundation or concealer two shades darker than your natural skin tone. Create depth and shadow in areas such as the cheeks and jaw. Use highlighting cream on the top of your cheek-bones to emphasize their shape.

Powder: Keep your powder application light. Blot the face lightly with a tissue, especially over the forehead, nose and chin. Pick up the powder on the puff and press it firmly on the face, one area at a time. Do not try to smooth it on by massaging the puff over the face. Whisk away the access using a soft, thick powder brush. Brush downwards to avoid powder getting caught in the fine facial hair.

Blusher: Use a rose-toned blusher for fair skin, for olive skin use peach and for a dark complexion choose red or apricot.

Put the blush on your brush, tapping off any excess. Look into the mirror and smile. This pin-points where the 'apples' of your cheek are. Gently brush the blusher upwards towards the temple, making a slight curve. Keep colour light and blend in well for a natural look. A touch of colour across the forehead and on the chin completes the look.

What Everyone Should Know About How Water Effects Hair

By Nadine Visscher

Have you ever noticed that wet hair is heavier than dry hair? Why is that? The outer layer of your hair, the cuticle, is made up of tightly over lapping scales for strength and resistance. And then there is the sebum, or the natural oil, that coats the scaly cuticle. Despite these 2 defenses, your hair still absorbs water. In fact healthy hair can absorb more than 30% of its own weight of water. Damaged hair is even more permeable - it can absorb up to 45% of its own weight of water. When the hair shaft is fully saturated, its diameter increases by 15 - 20% and it stretches or gets longer.

Effects of Water

What effect does water then have on hair? When the hair shaft is saturated, the cuticle's structure of the tightly over lapping scales is altered significantly. This causes the hair shaft to be fragile and more easily damaged. Add sunshine to this mix and you have very vulnerable hair. With the scales of the cuticle not offering enough protection, the sunshine can more easily damage the melanain - the part of your hair that is reponsible for color. Therefore, swimming on a hot summer day is refreshing for you, but it is very hard on your hair.

Hair Absorbs Water

You don't need to actually make your hair wet (by swimming, showering, or washing it) for it to absorb moisture; your hair can take in moisture from the air. People actually use human hair to make hygrometers (instruments used to measure humidity). Your hair changes in a very predictable way when you expose it to changes in humidity. It is very simple - hair stretches when it's wet and contracts (shortens) when it's dry. This happens at an exact rate and is proportional to the amount of water in the air. This is what makes your hair so predictably difficult to manage when the weather is humid.

Water is necessary to keep your hair clean, but it is hard on your hair by altering its structure and making it much more susceptible to damage.
