Stretch Marks - What Causes It?
By Marcus RyanThere's a common myth that in order to get stretch marks you need to be pregnant. Although that's certainly one reason, you can find yourself with these marks there are many others. Let's look at some of those causes. It's actually far more common than you might think, most people just are too embarrassed to talk about it.
There are many reasons for stretch or striae marks - pregnancy, the rapid weight loss or gain, and natural growth in adolescents. You might be surprised to find out that those that are depressed are more likely to have stretch marks. Lack of proper nutrients can result in stress marks, as can changes in your environmental or physical conditions. There are also medications that can cause scars. So you see, they're not all about pregnancy.
The stomach and breast area commonly develop these marks as a result of pregnancy because of the sudden weight gain. As the breasts swell and the belly enlarges the skin stretches rapidly and is not able to properly develop. Typically, you'll find scars developing on areas where there is more fatty tissue such as the breasts, stomach, upper arms, and thighs.
Striae result when the brain sends the wrong information to the skin and as a result, insufficient amounts of elastin and collagen are produced. Elastin and collagen form the connective tissue of the skin and when the connective tissue breaks apart. When this happens, the result is stretch skin marks.
Stretch or striae marks aren't just found on women. Men and women develop them whether they are fat or thin, young or old marks develop, and it doesn't matter where you live or what your Ethnic background is. They can affect anybody.
And they aren't on the surface. They start deep within the skin's tissue and eventually work their way to the surface. They might seem to appear almost while you sleep, but that's really not the case.
These lines and marks aren't irritating, and they don't hurt so they can go unnoticed for quite some time. During the earliest stages they have a pinkish color which is caused when micro blood vessels breaking up and bleeding. As these marks age, they usually take on a whitish silvery color. They have the ability to cover a large part of the body.
The best defense is to use products that are designed to treat stretch lines and marks. Vitamin E is an excellent choice to help reduce the appearance of these skin marks. Moisturizing these marks also reduces their appearance. There are many products on the market to help reduce the appearance of skin stretch lines and laser therapy is another option.
There you have it.
Now you know what causes stretch marks. You may not be able to stop the development of these scars and marks but you certainly can use one of the many products to help reduce their appearance.
