How Scent Affects Us
By Gloria SturmScents are invisible but they are an important part of our lives. We were all born with our own scent. In the distant past our sense of smell was a lot more acute than it is today and it was vital to our survival. Our ability to "smell" trouble is in part what has kept us from becoming extinct.
We don't need our noses as much as we used to because our survival does not rely as greatly on the sense of smell, but fragrance is still an important part of our lives.
Science has done a lot of research on the effect of scent on our relationships. When we meet someone we are either attracted to them or not, based on their subtle scent.
Scent can bring back many memories. My favorite flower is the lilac. Every time I smell those lovely purple flowers I am transported back to my childhood and the early spring on Cedar Creek.
My grandmother Handley loved Chanel No. 5 and she wore it much of the time. Today, whenever I get a whiff of that lovely fragrance I am transported back to my childhood when we would all gather at grandmother's bedside and listen to her stories of growing up on the Kansas Prairie. Her nightstand was another fragrant place. She would have little silk squares with lavender tied up in them with a blue ribbon in her hankie drawer. I get a peaceful and wonderful feeling every time I smell lavender.
I hope this little story of my past will start you thinking about those important people in your life and how the sense of smell can trigger all those memories.
My website, http://grandmotherhandleyscloset.com/ sells perfumes, aromatherapy, candles, and gift sets. All designed to bring back memories of lovely times past or to create new memories for you and those you care about.
This is a wonderful website. I am so glad I found it. I love to write articles, and short stories. I have wanted an internet outlet for my articles, and this is one of the best I have found. I know this sounds like a commercial for ezine articles, but it is a dream for a would be writer. I have been publishing the old fashioned newsletters for some years and writing articles for them. My website Grandmother Handleys Closet is named for my Grandmother. She was bedridden most of the time I can remember. She was a lovely lady and was very fond of perfumes and all things lovely. I used to write her short poems and stories. She told me she loved them, but then she was my Grandmother, but that started my love of writing. My website honors her and part of the proceeds go to fund Parkinsons Research. http://grandmotherhandleyscloset.com/
