Do-it-Yourself French Manicure

By Amy Linh Chen

A sure sign of class is to have a well-done French manicure. Overdoing the look can have the absolute opposite effect, however, so it's important to be careful when doing the manicure yourself.

To start, remove any old nail polish with an acetone nail-polish remover. This seems kind of obvious, but I've seen people that try to just layer on more crud on top of their nails. Please, don't be one of them.

Some people skip this next step, but I like to polish up my nails next. You can pick up one of those rectangular blocks of nail finishing paper at most salons and even convenience stores. It'll have four sides of usable polishing stuff, each different ratings to let you work your way down from a coarse grit (to remove large imperfections) to a fine grit to give the nail a nice natural shine.

Alright, now it's time to begin the actual French paint process. Start by painting a thin strip of white (or off-white) on the end of the nail. Be very careful when you're doing this. If you don't have steady hands, you can get a french manicure guide that will mask off the lower part of the nail, making it easy to paint just the tip. Make sure to keep the white part thin, or else it'll look unprofessional.

When you're done, apply a coat or two of light pink or beige polish to the entire nail to seal the whole thing and make the white tip not stand out too much. Let it dry and you're done!
