The Power of Scent
By Stephanie YoungerFor the longest time, Samantha, a thirty-year-old single woman, has been obsessed with purchasing fragrances, using them and watching reactions from the people around her. Her obsession with perfumes and fragrances is linked, inexplicably, to her belief in the power of scent. It's evident in the way people react to a scent and how they attach memories to a particular scent. Or when someone walks into a shop and feel instantly calm...or hungry!
Samantha is not the only one in this band-wagon, of course, because ask an aroma therapist what a scent can do and you'll receive a instant crash course on how a scent can change your emotions, feelings, and untangle knotted muscles and nerves. A good example would be this...imagine yourself walking into a mall and you pass a few perfume counters. You decide to stop and try out some of the perfumes they have on sale. An over-enthusiastic sales person flood you with a series of names, tossing a few careless remarks about fruits and flowers for effect, of perfumes that you've heard of but never tried. OK, so you decide to try a couple and then you walk to another counter and try a few more. Four counters later, you're likely to develop a headache. Or at least, you've numbed your sense of smell and feel slightly giddy.
Have you asked yourself why?
That's the power of scent, my friends. However, a lot of people make mistakes when purchasing a scent that they like. Once too often, I've seen people spray themselves liberally with free testers as they pass counters. Some even make it a point to drop by the perfume counters to touch-up on their scent. Bear in mind that every scent reacts differently to your body and it takes a total of 20 minutes for the top notes to settle down and reveal how you truly smell with the perfume on.
The body's chemical will affect, most importantly, the top notes which will sink in and sync with your body's natural odor. If you've taken notice, a perfume smells slightly different after an hour of wearing them. In fact, if a person wears the wrong type of fragrance during the wrong hour of the day, that person may come off as an over-aggressive or unapproachable person. If worn during the night, people may react to the scent differently...it can be seen as attractive, young or sexy, you see.
So, believe in the power of the right scent and the scent will dance with you to project to others (and yourself) what you want to project.
