Is Professional Make-up Advice Worth It?

By Rosalie Poels

It can be hard to know where to go to get good make-up advice. Do you spend hours staring blankly at the aisles in the chemist, or do you brave the potential intimidation of the department store make-up counters? How often have you spent hours searching for that new perfect lipstick, futilely testing on the back of your so it ends up resembling a bit of impressionist artwork until yes, that's it, you finally find the perfect lipstick! A mix of excitement and relief wash over you. That is until you get home and realise that you already have a drawer full of exactly the same shade that you never wear. Face it; we've all been there!

So what is the best way to get a new make-up look that you know you will wear and feel good in? Personally, until you are confident about what you are looking for I would recommend that you seek make-up advice from a professional beauty expert. A good make-up consultant should be able to advise you on how to get the best make-up looks to suit you. That means to work not just with your skin-tone, hair and eye colour, but also with your personal style and personality. We all have different approaches to clothes and make-up. There are some who always go for a more natural, relaxed look or those that always follow the latest fashions and want everyone to notice them. Or you may be more of a romantic and like pretty detail on everything, alternatively you may be more classic in your style and less reluctant to change what your comfortable with.

Regardless, the way you approach your wardrobe will have an impact on the way you approach make-up. A good make-up consultant should make you feel relaxed and comfortable before being able to advise you on new and different make-up looks and techniques that will really work for you.

A new make-up look can be as effective at updating your look as an expensive shopping trip for lots of new clothes. New shades come and go, as do products and application techniques. The trick is to know how to make it work for you. Bronze smoky looking eye shadows may be the look of the season but it will only make you look great if it suits your colouring and personal style. A trip to a make-up expert needn't cost you much, if anything (although I believe you do tend to get what you pay for, in fact it can be better paying for advice rather than having a 'free' consultation with a 'view to purchase a minimum of £xx amount'). A new eye shadow or pencil can really make the difference. And of course, if you are desperate to find the 'perfect lipstick' you will probably end up saving yourself a fortune in the long run by actually buying one that you will wear!
