Yes, Moms Can Look Gorgeous Too!

By Shuchi Kalra

So, you have a teen in school and a toddler in tow. Does that spell an end to your head-turning, traffic stopping days? Is your charm smothered by the every-day trivia of a woman's life? Is motherhood silently taking its toll on you? Do you secretly wish for you daughter's friends to tell her:"Wow! You have one gorgeous mommy"? Well, wake up to a new day as lost beauty is not too far away!

It does not take expensive spa visits and endless beauty treatments to "be beautiful". Just a nip here and a tuck there in your routine can help you transform into the diva you always wanted to be. Grooming and personal care is as important as being nice person at heart. Most women are so rushed up with jobs, homes, children and husbands, that they feel grateful even if they manage time to wash their faces! Looking and more importantly, feeling beautiful is crucial in a woman's quest for confidence and self-esteem. Moreover, a smart, well-turned out mom also inspires her brood to follow suit. Though they may not express this very often, kids love it when their mommy dresses up well, smells great and looks like she's on top of the world (that doesn't mean they don't love you otherwise!). By taking care of yourself, you are teaching your children the importance of self-grooming and presentation- a trait that goes a long way in shaping their future.

Let's dump "The Big Beauty Myth" of an hourglass figure, zero cellulite and flawless complexion in a trash-can and work towards a realistic and easily achievable goal. The mantra is - know yourself, accentuate your assets and hide your flaws.

Pamper Yourself Silly: take a welcome break from mollycoddling your children and pleasing your hubby and shower some attention on someone who deserves it most- yourself! Set out a "me-time" for your beauty and care regimen and be regular with cleansing, scrubbing, moisturizing and treating your skin. The aging process of our skin starts as early as mid-twenties- just when we think we are at the prime of youth! Spend those extra five minutes in the shower to file calluses and dead skin of your feet. Use home-made packs every now and then to rejuvenate your skin and hair, shave yourself smooth, slather on a fragrant lotion and come out looking and feeling like a million bucks. Don't hold yourself back; go get that wacky hairstyle you have been wanting for months. And yes, using a hair-color to cover gray's is officially a part of "aging gracefully"!

Eat Right: the phrase "fries lead to pimples" holds true for all ages. As years pass, the chips, pastries, cookies and junk begin to show up on our skin. Correct any diet anomalies and switch to a healthier diet with lots of fresh fruits and veggies, nuts, fiber and lean meat. Do include optimum amount of "good fats" and anti-oxidants to nourish and vitalize your skin, hair and nails. Psst...do you know how those celebs get that fresh glow and sparkling eyes? They drink loads and loads of water (At least that's what they all say!)

Tone-up: a wobbly belly is sure to give the blues to any lady. Work-up a feasible exercise routine (you could even pull in a friend for company) and shed those extra pounds. Remember- healthy is always beautiful. As you sweat out the adipose, your immunity gets a boost, your skin gets a flushed glow and you feel all the stress melting away. Easier said than done, isn't it? But think of the long list of benefits and what you will look like after a couple of months- healthy, slim, glowing.... Think! Think! Think!

If you Got It, Flaunt It: stay miles away from frumpy outfits that add pounds to your frame and make you look like a crumpled ruck-sack. On the other hand, avoid the temptation to pick stuff that is meant for teenagers. Shop for clothes that embrace your silhouette and in sync with your age. A neatly stitched and well-fitted dress can hardly go wrong. Flaunt your best assets- do you have sexy legs or shapely arms? A long elegant neck with collarbones that stand out? Wash-board abs or a toned-up posterior? It may be just about anything! Your clothes need not be revealing and tarty- just sophisticated and subtly sensuous. After years of experience, trial and error, we all know what looks best for us- just be honest to yourself while choosing an outfit. Try out hats, belts, unusual jewelery and scarves to spruce up your look.

Bring out the Vanity Case: we all have a box-full of make-up collecting mold in some corner of the closet. Choose a Sunday to throw away all that looks and smells bad and invest in good quality make-up that suits your age and skin type. Learn the art- with so many beauty magazines and television shows all over the place; this should be a piece of cake. Do not hesitate to use make-up at work or even on a short shopping trip. The right hues can really spark up your look and add dimensions to your features. Buff, shape and paint your nails to turn them into alluring talons. At the end of it, just spritz your favorite perfume on your pulse points and let the jaws drop.

Attitude Matters: slathering on tones of make-up and obsessing about appearances alone cannot make a woman feel beautiful. Go beyond "skin deep" and cultivate inner peace and harmony that would reflect on your face. A happy woman is a pretty woman and a smile is her best weapon! Spend your lone time with pleasant thoughts and memories and meditate if it helps.
Brush, floss, polish and flash those pearly whites whenever you get the chance. After all, a smiling face can never look less-than-pretty! So, are you all set to be a trophy-mama?
