Healthy Hair Advice
By Michele CaldwellThe summer months are the time of the year that your hair grows the fastest, it is also the time of year that your hair takes the most damage. If you spend very much time in the sun or in a pool, you probably already know this. The sun alone can lighten your natural pigment as well as hair that has been treated with color. When you combine the sun's rays with pool chemicals the two together can cause damage to your hair. You should always take precautions when you're in the sun for very long, by wearing a hat or scarf. You can also purchase spray-in products that contain a sunscreen for your hair. There are several kinds on the market they are usually under the name "Color protectors" or "Color shields", and are similar to leave-in conditioners. Using one of these products is one of the best things you can do for your hair in the summer.
Keeping your hair trimmed regularly is important not only to keep its style, but to keep your ends from getting frayed. Not everyone's hair grows out evenly, some people will notice that one side is thicker than the other, this side usually grows faster too. In some people their hair grows noticeably faster on one side than the other, while others do not. It has been said that the side we sleep on affects this growth difference, but it is most likely hereditary. Not everyone needs to trim their hair every six weeks, some may not need trimming for two to four months.
Everyone's pace of hair growth is different.
Just remember that if it looks like the ends needs trimming or if it's too long to work into your style, then it time for a trim.
Using the right products for your hair type is another way to keep your hair healthy. If your hair is color-treated or permed you need to be using products formulated for that hair type. If not, you risk having your haircolor fade or your perm to loose its curl. You can buy these products from your stylist, beauty supply or even a discount store. Just make sure it says on the label, that is it safe for color-treated hair or permed hair. Most salon brands carry their own line of color-treated hair products and permed hair products. As for the straight hair wearer, there are many, many products to be found. There are anti-frizz serums, ultra straight balms, straight smoothers and other leave-in gels, that you apply to damp hair and comb through. If you use a flat iron to straighten your hair, you might consider using a flat-iron spray to protect your hair from the heat and control frizzing. Whichever product you use on your hair, you never use hot water to shampoo your hair, hot water is very damaging to your hair cuticle and not good on the scalp either. Instead use warm or cool water to shampoo and rinse your hair, your hair will be much better off.
Having healthy hair goes hand in hand with having a healthy body, if you let you general health go down so does the condition of your hair. A healthy diet and regular exercise affects the hair, so if you take care of yourself your hair is going to show it. Remember, if you can't always eat right to take a vitamin supplement to give your hair, skin and body what it needs. Always treat your hair with the most care you possibly can, never yank a comb through tangled hair, start at the bottom of your hair and work up. Or you can use a Detangler if your hair is hard to comb through. Just remember if you treat your hair kindly, by keeping it trimmed, using the right products, the right water temperature and taking care of your health your hair will be healthy.
