3 Ways to Cope with a Bad Haircut
By Jennifer WasilewskiAt some point everyone one has experienced a hair disaster of some kind or another. While it may seem like there is very little hope in regaining an attractive head of hair, don't be cry. Here are some simple ways to cope with a bad hair cut.
Option # 1: Go Back to the Salon
If you’ve ever left the salon after a haircut and burst into tears upon seeing your reflection; you know how frustrating and emotional a bad haircut can be. Many times, after than first glimpse you’re automatically calling friends for support and shopping for hats, hair dye, and other 7 dollar solution to a 70 dollar (if you’re lucky) fashion disaster. Instead of investing more time and money into something your unhappy with, go back to the salon. While we’re quick to call the repair shop if they’ve damaged our car; or demand answers from the dry cleaner if our clothes come out looking worse than when they went in, we seldom go back to our hairdressers if we’re unhappy. You paid for a service and if you are extremely unsatisfied, you need to go back. Many salons will offer to fix the hair style gone awry, especially if it was a mistake on the part of their stylist.
Remember: While it’s often in our nature to place blame, before you demand a refund or a repair, you may want to make sure you’re in the right. If your hair stylists didn’t listen to what you asked for, or made a mistake with the cut or color they are at fault. However, if you were vague with what you wanted, demanded a certain style, or refused to heed warnings, your style dilemma is a result of your decisions. If you’re at fault for a failing hair style, don’t expect your hairstylist or the salon to take the blame.
Option #2: Pull it Back
If you’re unable or unwilling to go back to the salon for some repairs, and your hair is long enough, go ahead and pull it back. Your hair will eventually grow out, but if you can’t stand how it looks, a pony tail will mask what you dread. Don’t think this upsweep has to put an end to your style, dress up your tail with barrettes, scarves, flowers, and fancy hair ties.
Remember: It’s not healthy to wear your hair in a ponytail all the time, so if you’re not leaving the house, going to bed, or can throw a hat on, let your hair relax and hang low for the day. Wearing your hair down when possible will help reduce the amount of breaking that can result from the stress of being pulled back.
Option #3: Accessorize
Sometimes a little bit of illusion is all you need for masking some horrible hair. Invest in some scarves, fancy barrettes and bobby pin, head bands, bandannas, and hats to spice up and camouflage your hair style. Wish you never went for those bangs? Pull them back and pretend it never happened with a trendy scarf or headband. Sometimes a few strategically placed bobby pins can make all the difference. Spend some time in the mirror, trying out various accessories and styles until you get something you’re happy with.
Remember: Your goal is to help make an unappealing haircut look a little more acceptable. For that reason, don’t overdo it or choose accessories that don’t compliment your face. Try out different looks and get feedback from close friends and family.
